Haku Mele Workshop

Hawaiian Composition
This two-day workshop will explore the ‘ai ‘ōiwi, oral performance keys of Hawaiian composition. Participants will analyze and discuss mele of old and new and in the end compose an original mele.
Instructor, Kalani Akana, is currently a cultural specialist with the Office of Hawaiian Affairs developing cultural activities and connections for staff and strengthening corporate culture through collaborative approaches. He has over 20 years of leadership experience in Hawaiian language and education.

Ni’ihau Shell Earrings & Bracelet Workshop

This workshop will be held at the Kapolei Heritage Center @ 91-1270 Kinoiki Street on the DHHL site in Kapolei.

Ever since he was a child, Kai Hyde was drawn to Ni‘ihau shells. His love and fascination for these rare and beloved pupu (shells) developed into an artistry that he enjoys sharing with others.

In this workshop, students will learn to make a Pikake style pendant with the momi shells or a Kipona style pendant with a mix of momi and Kahelelani shells.
